Paul Soulikias, R.C.A. & Jean-Claude Mayodon
- Paul Soulikias, R.C.A. and Jean-Claude Mayodon: an unusual duet
Lamoureux Ritzenhoff Gallery presents, from October 27 to November 9, 2006 - vernissage on Saturday, October 28, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. - this special exhibition to celebrate the 80th anniversary of Soulikias and his 43 years career in Quebec, besides underlining a first posthumous review of an other important Canadian artist, Jean-Claude Mayodon, who lived his last years in Montreal. The exhibition includes 30 paintings from which 20 works - Winter and Summer French country landscapes, still lives and other social scenes - are from the last period of Mayodon in Montreal and, for the most part, from his agent's estate, and about 10 paintings - still lives, landscapes, portraits and nudes - from the private collection of artist Paul Soulikias, R.C.A. Lamoureux Ritzenhoff Gallery is proud to curate this special exhibition to greet the artistic work of these two important Montreal painters who bequeathed an important artistic inheritance to Canada without any other comparison.

Paul Soulikias, R.C.A., was born in Greece in 1926. Self-taught in his youth, he decides, at the end of his military service, to study art at the Art College ABC in Athens. When he terminates his studies, he leaves for Paris (1956) to visit museums and to meet with other artists. In 1959, he arrives in Canada, but it is only in 1965 that he begins to exhibit his paintings in important art galleries such as Moose Gallery, Gorveau Gallery, Galerie l'Art français (1968-1975), and later, at the famous Dominion Gallery (1974-1987).
" …Working especially with oil and with very thin pictorial layer, he creates compact masses where the total impression counts more than the detail; trees or fir trees, altogether with hills and clouds, are treated with a single detail and highlighted with a sense of very sure composition and color. He also creates paintings with city streets, still lives, portraits and other compositions, but his main subject is indubitably Canadian landscape. There, this European artist took up the rich tradition of the Group of Seven and of all these Canadian artists who made nature their guide and inspiration." (Hélène Quellet, Vie des Arts, no 63, Summer 1971).
The works of this famous Canadian artist are found at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts as in various public collections: the Municipality of Montreal, the Reader Digest, Bell Quebec, Gazoduc TQM, ABB, Thiro and the National Bank of Greece as well as in Canadian, European and American private collections. Several group and solo exhibitions cleared the way for his artistic evolution. The director of the Dominion Gallery, Dr. Max Stern, who bought and exhibited constantly his works, had underlined that Paul Soulikias "was a painter with international substance". It is in 1982 that Max Stern decides to organize a special exhibition on Soulikias'work - presented next to Henry Moore's works - to underline the publication of a first book on the artist under Signatures editions. A second important book has been published by ABB and Thiro societies in 1996 and was launched at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts.
The paintings presented at this exhibition are from diverse stylistic themes: still life, landscape, portrait and nude. These works are a testimonial to his inexhaustible artistic activity which nourrished the painter during all of his life: he produced a body of work of more than 3000 works.
Jean-Claude Mayodon was born in Fontainebleau (France) in 1938 and died in Montreal in 1981. The talent of this prodigious and prolific artist was first recognized at the age of fourteen by a First Prize from Île de France in Paris (1952) and then by his Professors at the Paris School of Fine Arts (1957-1961) and finally by the famous School of the Louvre which opened its doors in order for him to obtain a Ph.D. in Art History (1962-1964). He lives and studies successively in Spain, Germany, Austria and Scandinavia before establishing himself in Montréal (Quebec) in 1967. His unique style made him one of the biggest "exuberant impressionists". He painted subjects of French rural landscapes, still lives, bouquets, farm and city workers, clowns and occasionally horses who were depicting his different states of mind. During his short but productive career, he managed to impose his works in numerous public collections: Houston Space Program, The Center of Medical Research of the University of Montreal and in French museums: le Musée de la Ville de Paris, the War Museum, the Sceaux Museum and the National Library of Paris.
The paintings selected for this exhibition represent French old country side landscapes, still lives and various social scenes with personages. Art critics compared Mayodon to French painters of the beginning of the XXth century such as Danty, Vlaminck and Cézanne. Although he considered himself a "social expressionist" artist, one can indubitably consider Jean-Claude Mayodon a painter endowed with a limitless creative energy under the imprint of an exuberant impressionism.
